To the Editor:
In response to Shannon McFarland's letter to the editor on May 3 ["Graduate Students in Despair over Jobs," ADVANCE, 14 (18): 5], I wanted to assure new grads that the jobs for speech-language pathologists are out there.
I am not sure how North Carolina ended up with so many speech-language pathologists that it is hard to find a job there, but that is not the case in California. In our district we have had a full-time opening posted for a semester. We are adding a position for a part-time speech-language pathologist, and we are looking at five more speech-language pathologists retiring over the next five years. This creates a problem for us, as we anticipate great difficulty in filling these positions.
Relocation might not be your first choice, but the jobs are definitely out there if you can be a little flexible. Try California!
