Island Nursing and Rehab Center Receives Grant for Music Therapy Program, Dementia Patients

Print ArticleEmail Article

Island Nursing and Rehab Center, a provider of short-term rehabilitation and long-term care in Holtsville, NY, has received grant funding to implement a new music program for residents with dementia. Music programs have been shown to lower agitation and confusion and help focus attention and draw on happy memories.

A therapeutic recreation specialist with a background in music will conduct a variety of activities featuring different forms of music. Some of the new activities will include painting to music, reminiscing to different music, participating in seasonal sing-a-longs, and combining scents and sights when hearing popular music. One of the special features of the program will be a digital piano that will offer music by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Tom Jones and others.

"We have always been particularly committed to the residents in our dementia program and continue to provide innovative and creative programs that strive to make their environment safe, stimulating and comfortable," stated David Fridkin, administrator and CEO of Island Nursing and Rehab Center.
